Hay gente amiga y querida,
Gente que escucha los cantos
De tu isla puertorriqueña.

Y desde que era muy chica
A mis oídos llegaba
La fama exótica, amada
De ti, isla borinqueña.

¡Oh, Puerto Rico, querido!
Dicen tus lindas baladas.
Isla encantada y hermosa,
Mística caribeña estrella.

Cuando veo tus danzas,
Como “Virginia” y “Sara”,
El pecho se me desborda
Escalando tus montañas.

Tus mares y playas bellas
Embrujan mis sentimientos,
Creando un dilema interno:
No quiero abandonar tus tierras.

Y por las noches, cuando duermo,
Mi sueño se ve tejido
Con el cántico mágico y único
De tu coquí borinqueño.

¡Oh, manera de dormirse
En la espesa marejada,
En la espuma de tu lecho
Que me mece en la alborada!

¡Oh, Puerto Rico, querido!
Me has brindado tu mano
Cuando me encontraba triste
O cuando cantaba alegre.

Tus costumbres me ennoblecen,
Tus canciones me entristecen.
Gracias por abrir tus brazos,
¡Puerto Rico, mi amado!

Oh, My Beloved Puerto Rico!

In my Cuscatlecan land
There are friendly and dear people,
People who listen to the songs
Of your Puerto Rican island.

And since I was very young
The exotic, beloved fame
Of you, Borinqueñan Island,
Reached my ears.

Oh, dear Puerto Rico!
Say your beautiful ballads.
Enchanted and beautiful island,
Mystical Caribbean star.

When I see your dances,
Like “Virginia” and “Sara”,
My heart overflows
Climbing your mountains.

Your beautiful seas and beaches
Bewitch my feelings,
Creating an internal dilemma:
I don’t want to leave your island.

And at night, when I sleep,
My dream is woven
With the magical and unique song
Of your Borinqueñan coquí.

Oh, the way to fall asleep
In the thick tide,
In the whiteness of your bed
That rocks me at dawn!

Oh, dear Puerto Rico!
You have offered me your hand
When I was sad
Or when I sang happily.

Your customs ennoble me,
Your songs make me sad.
Thank you for opening your arms,
Oh Puerto Rico, my beloved!
